In a world where AI can produce original writing in seconds, I feel increasingly compelled to defend the authenticity of my work. I want to be fully transparent about the limited roles AI plays in my writing:
1. Developmental editor (structure, organization, theme, pacing, etc.)
Example prompt:
Does this section advance the central theme of the piece, or does it distract from it?
2. Copyeditor (grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, formatting, etc.)
Example prompt:
Identify repeated words or phrases without suggesting alternatives.
That’s it.
Not ghostwriter. Not co-author.
I draw a firm line at generating text. Passing off AI-generated writing as my own would strike at the heart of my moral code.
I take enormous pride in my work, which I experience as a spiritual errand. Would I love to be a best-selling author or an Oscar-winning filmmaker? Of course. But not at the expense of my voice and integrity. That would be a hollow victory.
Furthermore, when authors allow AI to speak for them, it degrades public trust in all writers.
I have stories that need to be told. Here is my promise to you: I will be the one to tell them.
